What is Manuka Honey

Manuka honey has a strong flavour, characterised as "earthy, oily, herbaceous",and "florid, rich and complex". It is described by the New Zealand honey industry as having a "damp earth, heather, aromatic" aroma and a "mineral, slightly bitter" flavour. 

It’s produced by European honey bees (Apis mellifera) who pollinate the "New Zealand tea tree flower", Leptospermum scoparium or more commonly known as the manuka bush.

Why Manuka Honey

Manuka honey’s have antibacterial properties are what set it apart from traditional honey. Methylglyoxal is its active ingredient and likely responsible for these antibacterial effects. Additionally, manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

In fact, it has traditionally been used for wound healing, soothing sore throats, preventing tooth decay and improving digestive issues. The intensive research for the Manuka honey also make the honey was easily to be classified based on MGO or UMF numbers.

Manuka or Tualang Honey?

Honey is well known possesses therapeutic potential, including wound healing properties and antimicrobial activity. Compare to other normal honey, Tualang honey was close have the same benefit as Manuka honey. However no extensive studies of the antibacterial properties of tualang (Koompassia excelsa) honey on wound and enteric microorganisms have been conducted. Tualang honey and floral origin have yet to be determined and standardized. In contrast, manuka honey has been widely researched and its antibacterial potential is renowned worldwide. Honeys with proven antibacterial potency (UMF 10+ and above) have been recommended for wound care preferentially over honeys of low or unknown potency.
